The Shield Shows
The Shield Shows were first held in 1983 at the sports fields in Ludlow Road, Feltham, Middlesex. Initially they were for horses only, but later dog shows ran alongside them. The name "Shield Show" was chosen for alliteration, and because shield shaped trophies and rosettes with shield shaped centres were available, to carry through a theme.
In the late 80's the lease was obtained for the former riding school in Charlton Road, Charlton Village, which was derelict. This became the Shield Stables and Stud.
The shows continued to grow in popularity and are today perhaps the most popular shows for novices in Surrey. SHield was the first show to offer novelty events at horse shows, emulating classes which had long been held only at dog shows before. Prices are kept very low so that everyone can enter and enjoy these family events.
About the Organiser
Diane Whiting is the original organiser of the Shield Shows and continues to enjoy running them to date.
She breeds and shows Paintalusian horses (coloured part bred Andalusians) and border collies.
One of her collies, Eric, won or was placed in three classes at Crufts in 2014. Diane believes it is important that working ability is as important as good looks in a collie, and is proud that Eric has proven himself in sheep herding and working trials, as well as being successful in the breed ring.
CAPTION: Diane with Xerxes, a home bred, three quarter Andalusian, and Doris the border collie.
